(VMX) Support Tip: How to select a personal certificate in VM Explorer Web Server settings?

In the HPE VM Explorer@ – Starter screen, select Web Settings. A “WebServer Settings” screen will pop up, where we can view existing certificate and configure new personal certificate.

A self-signed HTTPS certificate for HPE VM Explorer is automatically installed on your local computer, in the Personal store. To find out more information about your certificate, click the hyperlink “HPE VM Explorer HTTPS Certificate” and then read the Certificate dialog box.

Browse…

Click this button to add a certificate, if you already have one available on your computer, select the desired certificate in the Windows Security dialog box and then click OK.

Note: You can use only certificates already installed in the following folders of your local computer:

  • Personal
  • Trusted Root Certification Authorities
  • Intermediate Certification Authorities
  • Trusted Publishers
  • Untrusted Certificates
  • Third-Party Root Certification Authorities
  • Trusted People
  • Other People

To view if certificate is stored in Personal store on your local computer, open MMC console

Add “Certificates” and select “Computer account” in next screen

Expand Certificates -> Personal -> Certificates. On right screen, we can view a list of available certificates

Important:

When using your personal certificate, make sure it is valid (not expired), that it has a “private key” and that it’s “Enhanced Key Usage” has already been set, otherwise we will not able to browse certificates in VM Explorer.

The Friendly Name (or the Issued By name, if the first is not available) of the current HTTPS certificate is displayed in the Details tab, otherwise HPE VM Explorer will display Certificate not found.

Known issues: Unable to browse personal certificate although personal store has certificates installed, an example -.

From below screen shot we can see that personal store has two valid personal certificates and one VM Explorer self-signed (localhost) certificate.

Fig8.png

Tried to browse personal certificates (VMX_Test_Cert and VMXSub-CA) in VM Explorer, but it shows only one self-signed certificate

Fig9.png

Checked certificate “VMXSub-CA” details, it had corresponding private key but “Enhanced Key Usage” was not set and hence it was not visible in VM Explorer

Fig10.png

Similarly “VMX_Test_Cert” certificate did not find any corresponding private key and hence was not visible in VM Explorer.

Summary: To avoid any certificate issue make sure -

  1. Certificate is stored in specified folder (for example – Personal)
  2. A valid certificate (not expired)
  3. It has a “private key” and that it’s “Enhanced Key Usage” has already been set.
