WMI: RPC server is unavailable

Hi,

we are trying to discover windows from UD using WMI and NTCMD, we have domain user crdentials with local admin access on the server, server is pingable  and port 135 is open from the probe server to the target machine, WMI services and related RPC services are up and running on the target servers, probe and target servers both are from same domain within the firewall, but still we are seeing RPC server unavailble error , wbemtest is also failing. We need to suggest customer the possibe ways to resolve this error.

Request you all to help with your possible suggestions. thanks.

Regards,

Pranathi.

Re: WMI: RPC server is unavailable

Here's what I gleaned from various sources. Check:

1. Date/Time target server, misalignment can lead to issues as you describe. See if you can get them to synch with NTP.

2. DNS settings target server, incorrect name resolution possible cause.

3. Check target server Windows Firewall settings, most specifically the Inbound Rule setting:  "Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI-In)" rule.

4. Check if access to high end ports between 1024 - 65535 is permitted.

Re: WMI: RPC server is unavailable

Hi ,

Thanks all for your replies, as said there are many possible reasons for RPC server unavailable issue, One of the reasons we had in our discovery was, issue with the domain user crdentials. only the specfic user account which we were using for discovery though it  has local user admin access,it was not working , where as other crdentials were workign fine . So, we  had asked datacenter to recreate the domain user account with user name and password which would have local admin access on all servers.  whcih resolved the issue of RPC server unavailable, so i assume that user account was either blocked or password needed reset .
