(SOM) Support Tip: How to tell if your Linux system is using LVM?

Hello SOM Community,

LVM also known as Logical Volume Manager can provide easier management of file systems.  This includes resizing partitions, taking snapshots and having a single file system span multiple disks.

Unfortunately, Vertica Analytic Database, which is used by Operations Bridge Reporter (OBR), does not support the use of LVM on any drive where the database (catalog and data) files are stored.

The next question is how can someone tell if LVM is being used by a particular partition in Linux?

There is a command that has been around for a long time that can provide this information.  That command is the fdisk command.  This command with the -l option exists on many different flavors and versions of Linux and Unix.

Here is an example of the fdisk -l command being used on a RHEL 6.6 system.

[root@hostname ~]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 241.6 GB, 241591910400 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 29371 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0007e026

   Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1   *           1          64      512000   83  Linux
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2              64       29372   235416576   8e  Linux LVM


Within initial listing, it shows a table with Id and System columns.  If the Id is 8e then the System entry will be Linux LVM.  This means that that partition is using Linux LVM.  If the Id is 83, then the System entry will be a standard Linux partition and will not be using LVM.

In the example above, partition /dev/sda1 is not using LVM but partition /dev/sda2 is using Linux LVM.

The two options that are available in this situation are the following:

  1. Reinstall the Linux system so that it does not use LVM.
  2. Add an additional or separate disk or disk partition for use with the Veritca Analytic Database that does not use LVM.
