(SOM) Support Tip: Directory Permission Requirements & Location of install binaries for SOM Reporter

Hello SOM/SE Community,

WIth the release of SOM 10.10, there are more unexpected items that can be found when attempting to install the SOM Reporter (Operations Bridge Reporter or OBR) software.  One of those challenges is that the installation pre-check checks for directory permissions for specific directories.  If these permissions are not set properly, the install will not continue beyond the pre-check.

To help you with this process, here are the three items to note that will help you get past this hurdle.

  1. Installation Media cannot be located within /opt directory path.
It is an installation requirement that the SOM Reporter (OBR) installation media not be located anywhere within the /opt directory path for the installation to run successfully.
  2. The /opt directory is required to have 775 permissions.
The /opt directory is the installation location for the SOM Reporter (OBR) software.  It is required that this directory have 775 (rwxrwxr-x) permissions as a minimum.  Without these permissions, the installation will not continue.
  3. The directory containing the installation media requires 777 permissions.
The directory where the installation media is located (Ex.  /Software, /SOMR or /tmp) and where the 'setup.bin' binary is located is required to have permissions of 777 (rwxrwxrwx) in order for the installation to pass the installation pre-check.

These are three recommendations that will help your SOM Reporter (OBR) Installation run to completion with the least amount of difficulty.

Good Luck with your efforts.  Another Support Tip will be made next week.

Regards,

Mark Butler
