Can someone please explain how the static vs dynamic port allocation assignment works on the HPSD 4.5 Application server. We are trying to isolate a client transaction through a terminal session in order to get network latency stats. We were hoping to use unique port no's. Currently the app servers use 30999 with multiple client connections. We want the traffic on only one.
Communication between servers and client computers takes place via TCP/IP ports.
The Service Desk application server listens by default on port 30999 for incoming connections from Service Desk clients. The port number can be changed by modifying the itp.port value in the configuration editor.
If the port specified does not match the default 30999, then all clients will need to specify the correct port number when they connect to the application server.
To change the port number used by clients: 1. From the Start menu on the client, select Program Files and then hp OpenView service desk 4.5 .
2. In the Service Desk submenu, select Client and then Start user settings editor . The hp OpenView service desk Server Accounts dialog box is displayed.
3. Select the Service Desk account being used by the client and click the Modify button. The account Modify dialog box is displayed.
4. In the hp OpenView Service Desk Server name field add the port number after a colon. For example, myappserver:12345, where 12345 is the new port number.
The Service Desk application server listens by default on port 30980 for incoming HTTP Post requests from the SD_event program.
The port number can be changed by modifying the http port number value in the configuration editor on the application server. If you change the default port number, SD_event needs to be told to use the new value. SD_event can use another port number by specifying the port number on the command line with the -p flag or by specifying a port entry in the SD_event configuration file.
The application server uses by default port 25 for SMTP connections. The port number can be changed by modifying the value in the configuration editor on the application server. Using a port number other than 25 will make it difficult to configure external mail transfer agents to correctly deliver mail to the desired port.
When dynamic port allocation is enabled the client listens on port 40999 for incoming requests from the application server.
If the port number is in use the client will search for a free port by increasing the port number by 1 until a free port is found. The port number can be set to a fixed number by selecting Options from the Tools menu in the client interface and selecting the Static port allocation on the Advanced tab page. In the Static port allocation field the desired port number can be filled in.
If the specified port is in use the client will not search for a free port.
The Service Desk Agent listens by default on port number 50998 for incoming requests from the Service Desk application server. The value of this port number can not be changed. Communication between Service desk application servers and the database server also takes place via TCP/IP ports.
If an Oracle database is used then the protocol is Oracle Net. Oracle Net uses port 1521. If a Microsoft SQL Server database is used the protocol is Tabular Data Stream. Tabular Data Stream uses port 1433.
When running in a firewall environment all network traffic destined for the port numbers listed above, the Service Desk defaults, must be allowed to pass the firewall. If you change the defaults, network traffic to the new port numbers must be allowed to pass the firewall instead.
