We are currently using a custom field (String 40) to store the contact email for the caller on a service call. It turns out that this is not big enough for some email addresses and I'd like to change to a new custom field that is a String 80. I'm wondering if others have been through this kind of exercise and what I need to consider when making this change? So far I have come up with: - create new custom field - put new field on forms - remove old field from forms - copy existing values to new field - modify rules that reference old field - modify web service code that references old field
Are there other things I need to consider?
For the copy of the value from the old field to the new field, the only way I know how to do this is through a trick with a database rule. Create a rule based on a temp custom field that will copy values from the old field to the new field. Then use update all to trigger the rule. Does anyone know a better way to do this?
