Infromation field trucate data

Helo all,

Does anyone know how to prevent users from entering more data into the informatino field once it reaches it's max size. If this field reaches it's max size and if you enter more info, the data is truncated and therefore some data are lost.

Any ideas how you handle this. I searched the forum, but didn't find similer issues

Thanks in advance,

Re: Infromation field trucate data

Information field is by default takes 4000 characters. I think, you can modify the form and include the size/chars limit next to the name of the field, so that the end users using the form will know the size of the attribute.

Re: Infromation field trucate data

Hi,

By default if the data is being entered in the Client, the restriction is enforced. If SP is giving this issue, edit the ViewEditServiceCall.jsp and change the appropriate text field with the restrictions.

Hope this helps...

Re: Infromation field trucate data

Toon,

I think the best way to handle this is:

1) Inform your users that fields have maximum sizes, as in most software.
2) Ask them to look at what they have typed before saving it.
3) You might consider making a change request to H-P so that the client beeps when you reach the limit of the field size. At least the user would probably realize that something is wrong.

Re: Infromation field trucate data

Thank you all for replying,

This issue is on the HPSD client not on SP, I forgot to specify. It sounds like currently there's no available option to prevent users more text.

I have renamed the field so it show the size limit and informed users, but that didn't help. You don't really know if the next character you enter will truncate the rest of the information that's already there.

I will submit a case with HP to put some sort of a popup to notify users once the Information field reached it's max size.

Thanks anain everyone,

Hi,

I am running SP 10, SD 4.5. When I tried to enter text in the information field, I could enter the following data:

More than that, the cursor would not move and there would be no more numbers typed.

I counted this text. It is exactly 4000 characters.

This functionality exists in the client.

Hope this helps...

Hi,

My apologies for that text. I didn't realise it would appear so long.

Re: Infromation field trucate data

Hi Saurabh,

I see that the client does restrict users from entering more data into the field if it reached it's max size. I found our problem why the system allows users to do this.

We've setup the Information field to read only and had another field where users can enter new data. We have a DB rule which takes the new data catenate it with Date\Time and current user's name then insert it into the Information field.

It looks like the system does prevent users from entering more text, but it doesn't prevent itself. I will have to find a more creative way to prevent this.

10 points to you Saurabh,

Re: Infromation field trucate data

So, Toon, this is more like a running journal and hence you do have that problem as it can grow beyond 4000 and DB/UI rules don't give warnings of that. But one workaround is to replace the Information field for this purpose with the 64K custom field (which is what we usually use for this journal type function). You are not likely to overflow that.
Disadvantage is that the custom field won't appear on service pages (I think Information does).

Re: Infromation field trucate data

Ken,

Thank you for your reply. I am currently looking into switching to the 64k custom field. This wouldn't be any problem for us we do not Service Page enabled in our shop.

Re: Infromation field trucate data

Hi Toon,

Even if you did use Service Pages, it wouldn't be that difficult. I recently did this (displaying a custom field, as read-only) on Service Pages using a 64k custom field (for running notes diary). In case required, even that's easy.
