Re: HP SD 5.1 importing data for CI from barcode scaner

Rachid,

There are fundamentally two different functions for scanning CI labels: 1) verifying the inventory; and 2) simplifying data input for a field service technician.

There are commercial products that help with one function or the other, but not both. These products existed for ver. 4.5; I do not know if they have updated them for 5.1.

If you are willing to cobble together your own solution for verification, it is really quite simple. There are many scanners on the market that store in memory the scanned data and easily download the data to an ascii file. From the ascii file, it is quite simple to upload the data to a database. The question is what you want to do with that data: if you want to simple update the CMDB, then use Data Exchange. However, if you want to make intelligent use of the data, and compare it to the CMDB before possibly updating the CMDB, then you will need to create your own query or report to view the differences.

Re: HP SD 5.1 importing data for CI from barcode scaner

We have used a scanner that populates and the scanned infor into an Excel spreadsheet. We then export the data via Service Desk (which converts that Excel spreadsheet into an xml file) and then we import the xml into Service Desk.
You just have to play around with your mappings so that it populates the SD database correctly.
