Audit History/Worklog Subject Field

Hi. Just wondering if anybody has encountered this problem before. I have assigned a value to the Subject field in the default History Line Template. However when i relate this template to the Audit History/Worklog and open a new ticket, the subject field is empty on the new service call. This means that Incoming service calls through the medium of email are are being rejected as the subject field is a compuloery field. Am i doing something wrong?
