In my oppinion there is not much you need apart from the ppm workbench and probably an exernat sql tool (like sqltools http://www.sqltools.net/). If you need to monitor your instances yourself, you may want to have something like nagios, but in most companies that would probably be a job for a central team in the IT department.
If you need access to the app on the unix box, I use Putty. And also get familiar with some unix commands. They come in handy when modifying certain configuration files and viewing various logs within the system.
