Out Of Memory Error

Hi,

We recently upgrade to PPM v8.0 SP3 and after few days we are getting Out Of Memory Error.

E.g.

1. An unknown error has occurred. For more information, please contact your PPM administrator and provide the following GUID number: GUID=533ABE96-39A8-40B0-F313-47B39D15F714

            at com.kintana.core.server.UncaughtExceptionDefaultHandler.uncaughtException(UncaughtExceptionDefaultHandler.java:24)

           Caused by: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

2.

An unknown error has occurred. For more information, please contact your PPM administrator and provide the following GUID number:

            GUID=DBDA7614-054D-F753-5CE6-81DA6637FAD4 at com.kintana.core.server.UncaughtExceptionDefaultHandler.uncaughtException(UncaughtExceptionDefaultHandler.java:24)

            Caused by: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded

We ahev already increaed HEAP_SIZE parameters in server.conf, but still getting this issue.

Did somebody face this issue or know the resolution for this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Abhi

Re: Out Of Memory Error

Hi, Abhi,

we had a similar issue and we added the following parameters to server.conf:

com.kintana.core.server.SERVER_MAX_HEAP_SIZE=1280m
com.kintana.core.server.SERVER_INIT_HEAP_SIZE=1280m
com.kintana.core.server.SERVER_MAX_PERM_SIZE=256m.

if this still does not help, I would suggest the following:

- disable any PPM services you are not using;

- implement a PPM cluster(starting with PPM 9.12, you have the option to run the services in a separate node);

- contact HP Support.

Alex,

We have same values for these parameters, but still getting this problem.

Thanks anyway.

Re: Out Of Memory Error

Hi, Abhi,

in this case we have to dig deeper :)

for problem #1: this is the most difficult to investigate. You have to "catch" a snapshot of the system at the time the error occured (how many users where logged on, which services were running etc).

for problem #2: you can try starting the server with -XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit (you should change the kStart.sh) and this should temporarily solve the problem.

If there really is high usage in the system, you can implement a cluster and these problems will go away.

Anyways, such issues should be raised to HP Support also.

Re: Out Of Memory Error

We have added debugging parameters to catch a snapshot of the system at the time this error occurred.
We have created a support ticket with HP.
Thanks Alex!

Re: Out Of Memory Error

Abhi,

We have been getting this error for the past couple of years, it is well documented.  HP told us that we had to upgrade to resolve the issue, we currently restart the services a couple of times a day to fix the issue.

Re: Out Of Memory Error

Hi Alex,

What is "-XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit" ? is it a kStart.sh parameter ? What does it do ?

Re: Out Of Memory Error

Hi, Celil,

this is a java parameter which instructs the java server not to take into account the configured limits for the Garbage Collector in terms of duration and freed memory.

As I was saying, Abhi's system is probably under heavy load and the GC should NOT free up too much memory. This is only a temporary workaround, until we find out what's really going on.

Re: Out Of Memory Error

As HP support suggested, We have added "-XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError" parameter in kStart.sh script and re-started the server in DEBUG mode. We are monitoring the server logs.

Re: Out Of Memory Error

Are there any scheduled reports or the report execution usage is high..? In case there are them temporaraliy remove the scheduled reports also avoid report usage.... and then check the out of memory issue.

Also if you are using  JAVA version 1.6 (u25/u26 or HP-UX 1.6.0.09) then upgrade it, as these versions are having out-of-memory issue.

Cheers..

Re: Out Of Memory Error

Hi Alex,

I have the same problem, the system starts displaying Out Of Memory errors, I want to know how to use your suggestion to add "-XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit" to kStart, this could help to avoid the error?

Regards.

Gerardo.
