Limiting number of portlets on a personal dashboard

Guys,

Do you know how to limit a number of portlets in personal dashboards?  We want to enforce the maximum number of portlets users can add to their personal dashboards.

Please, share your knowledge.

Thanks,

Dmitry

Re: Limiting number of portlets on a personal dashboard

Hi Dmitry,

hope all is well with you.

logged for 7.5 and in Status deferred, sorry. Here the details:

DETAILS
PPMC Performance Optimization - Currently, HP PPM does not allow the administrators to control the number of portlets a user can add to their dashboard. While it is strongly recommended that the number should be kept to a minimum, a user can add any number of portlets. The tool should provide an interface to allow Administrators to control the maximum number of portlets that a user can have on their dashboard.

SCENARIO
There are several users in the system with about 20 active portlets under the one dashboard. Some users would even have these resource intensive dashboards set as their start-up page. This not only increase the time for them to login to PPM, it also causes system performance issues as they attempt to load these dashboards. By allowing the Administrators to control the maximum number of portlets that a user can have on their dashboard will improve this situation.

WORKAROUND
There is no workaround for this issue other than asking the users to manually adjust their dashboards to ensure they only have a maximum amount of x portlets in them.

UNACCEPTABLE
As much as we can train the users to not add so many portlets to their dashboards, there is no way an Administrator control the number of portlets that can be added to a dashboard.

REQUIRED
Provide an interface to allow Administrators to control the maximum number of portlets that a user can have on their dashboard.

BUSINESS IMPACT STATEMENT
Administrators will not be able to configure PPM to control the maximum number of portlets that a user can have on their dashboard. As a result, this will cause system performance issues especially when these resource intensive dashboards are loaded up together during peak business hours.

Spoiler

Hi Dirk,

I was also exactly looking for something like this however when you say minimum number of portlets is there a number against it. Because it becomes very difficult to interpret minimum to a number.

Do you know what is the minimum number of portlets recommended per page?

Jay

Re: Limiting number of portlets on a personal dashboard

Hi Jay,

I Imagine that "minimum" in this case means "as few as possible".  Each portlet will have it's own impact on performance so it would be difficult to specify a number ...

For example a List portlet could have two versions - one to bring back max of 10 results and another to bring back a max of 500 results.  The one returning 10 may be suited to live on a  dashboard with 3 or 4 other similar portlets, while the 500 results might be better placed on it's own dashboard.  The graphical portlets may be another situation where the same query might take 2 secs on one system but 200 secs on another, so I believe it is all very subjective :)
