How to attach ticket # from 3rd party tool to DM request?

We are doing an integration between PPM and Remedy using web services. We plan to create a Remedy ticket through a program written to call the Remedy web services to create a Remedy ticket, and attach that Remedy ticket number (which is returned by the Remedy web service) to our PPM request as a reference (by the use of the PPM web services).

How can we use the PPM web services to create references?
Can you use the references section of a demand mgmt request? Can you use a table component?
If that is not possible, is there an alternative solution (preferably not through the use of notes)?

We want to be able to create and attach multiple Remedy tickets to a PPM request.
