HP PPM - How to send Notification from PPM data base ? To Implement Forget Password Feature.

Hi All,

We are working on implementing Forget password feature to  HP PPM users. Please let me know if we can send Mails from data base directly by updating Notification tables in PPM ?

It will be very useful if there is a feature to reset password for users themselves which is lacking in PPM.

If  any one has already implemented this Please share some  inputs related to this

Regards,

Santhosh

Hi Santosh,

I can't help you with the customization request, but for your reference I'd like to make you aware of the following ER that was requested by me a while ago:

User needs to a feature that on the login page of PPM the user can click on a link "Forgot Password", which enables the user with typing in the user id, to receive a reset password mail to the outlook account. In the mail, a link is provided to the user, which enables the user to open the password reset page on PPM. After entering the user id and the new password, the user can login again to PPM. This feature is missed in PPM, because it reduces the administration effort considerably.

QCCR1L45527 Password reset page feature like available in QC needed for PPM

Just so you are aware.

Best of luck.

Dirk

Re: HP PPM - How to send Notification from PPM data base ? To Implement Forget Password Feature.

Hi Santhosh,

1) Don't mess up with KNTA_NOTIFICATIONS table. It's not a good idea. If you want to send custom notifications outside of a PPM workflow, you should rather leverage the Oracle utl_smtp package to send emails. It should do the work and will be much more robust regarding PPM upgrades (and as an appreciable side-effect, HP Support + PPM R&D won't complain about voiding your PPM warranty with hazardous inserts in the PPM DB next time you open a case with HP).

2) A more generic question to the PPM admins around here to follow-up on Dirk's answer: Let's say that, hypothetically, R&D were to consider implementing this ER in a future PPM release (as usual this is in no way a commitment nor a PPM roadmap statement). Is the feature as described by Dirk satisfactory, or would it not meet your internal security policy and some extra security measures should be added (such as the usual personal questions on your first pet's name or your mother maiden's name).

One of our concerns is that with the feature as described in the ER, if an attacker were to gain access to a PPM user's email inbox, they could easily get access to their PPM account by reseting the password.

Every input on this feature is warmly welcomed.

Kind Regards,

Etienne.

Just thinking out loud...

What about a generic user account with username & pw known by all, with only access to a custom request type for password resets? Someone could log on, submit a request to reset password for a particular user, and the workflow could be routed to that person's manager, etc for approvals needed and possibly even update the password via execution step and inform the person that it has been done...

That would work fine in an environments where all users are somewhat trusted, which is not necessary the case for every PPM environments.

So a great workaroud, but not really an option to include as a "core" PPM feature.

Re: HP PPM - How to send Notification from PPM data base ? To Implement Forget Password Feature.

Most of our users are authenticated with AD so all account maintenance is managed by that part of the corporate infrastructure and we do not need to worry about it. For those few users that are configured with PPM authentication, we created a request like the one Erik described to reset their password with a random, single use password value and send them email with the new value. This request type is available only to the Help Desk and they use their normal methods to identify the user and log the request.

An alternative you could use would be to make this request type available to everyone so they could reset a co-worker's password. The identify of the request submitter would then be captured as part of the process and would be traceable if the feature was being abused.

You can send email from PPM DB by inserting proper values in the below tables:

KNTA_NOTIF_TXN_PARENTS - to hold the Subject & Body

KNTA_NOTIF_TXN_DETAILS

KNTA_NOTIF_TXN_RECIPIENTS - to add recipients (loop to add all the recipients in TO & CC)

For Forgot Password option, you can create a custom JSP page which will connect to PPM DB, resets the password to custom pre-defined and email the password to the user...

You can use your own logic to implement this.

//Add this to "OnDomLoad" event
