Exporting from PPM to Excel 2007 automatically assigns wrong extension

Exporting from PPM to Excel 2007 automatically assigns the wrong extension (xls). In order to open in Excel 2007, the extension needs to be xlsx. Is there a way to systematically to change the extension that PPM assigns to excel exports?

Hello Victoria,
I don't think this is configurable. As long as PPM supports older versions of Excel it will generate a filetype all these versions can read, therefore .xls.
Are you having dificulties opening the .xls files in Excel 2007?

Re: Exporting from PPM to Excel 2007 automatically assigns wrong extension

The file opens successfully, however, there's a warning message that appears when PPM is exporting the file, before showing the results. The warning states that the file is exported in an unsupported format (i.e., not with the xlsx extension). I want to tell PPM that the file extension is Office 2007 so the warning message doesn't appear to the user.

Hi,

You can rename the extention to xlsx before you open the file in excel.
Maybe you can switch off this check in excel.

Thank you, you are absolutely right. Changing the save format in Excel 2007 allows you to export and save the file without getting a warning message.

Hi all,

This is a security feature in Office 2007 that checks to see that the file content being opened matches the extension type. Chances are, the actual file format that PPM is returning is in .csv format but with a .xls extension so that it opens in Excel.

You can disable this check with group policies or with a registry hack:

Go to Excel 2007, click on the MS Office button, go to Excel Options, Save category. Under Save Workbooks, choose save file in this format (xls). User does not get a warning message from MS Office when exporting to Excel from PPM.
