Snmp V3

Snmp V3

Hello Experts,

In my current environment, most of the devices uses snmp v2.

I wanted them to move to snmpV3. Can some one provide some advantages of snmpv3 and the limitaions of v3 monitoring in NNMi ?

thanks in advance.

Re: Snmp V3

Summary for SNMPv3 protocol:

Simple Network Management Protocol Version 3 (SNMPv3) is an interoperable standards-based protocol for network management. SNMPv3 provides secure access to devices by a combination of authenticating and encrypting packets over the network.

The security features provided in SNMPv3 are:

• Message integrity—Ensuring that a packet has not been tampered with in-transit.

• Authentication—Determining the message is from a valid source.

• Encryption—Scrambling the contents of a packet prevent it from being seen by an unauthorized source.

Hope this help!

Re: Snmp V3

Hello Tanish,

NNMi uses SNMP queries for ongoing discovery and monitoring of your network environment.

SNMPv3 user-based security model (USM) settings are used to authenticate messages sent from NNMi to an SNMP agent.

NNMi uses SNMP to gather useful information about the devices in your network environment. After receiving an SNMP request, an SNMP agent compares the SNMPv3 user-based security model (USM) settings in the request to the SNMPv3 user-based security model (USM) settings that are configured for that SNMP agent. The SNMP agent responds to the request only when the request is accompanied by valid SNMPv3 user-based security model (USM) settings.

There is no limitation as such with SNMPv3 . it just adds additional layer of security  for access.
