The All-New SHR 9.40! 3 Developments in HP Service Health Reporter you won't want to miss!

Developments in the new SHR release focused on the three main release themes:

  1. BSM Reporting Evolution
  2. Improved Time to Value and
  3. Extended Content Set

SHR 9.40 ushers in features that extend IT reporting platform support and scalability in addition to bolstering the out-of-the-box content suite. This version also augments support for BSM APM and the new OMi10 deployment scenarios.

You can download SHR 9.40 here to try it for yourself.

What you can do in SHR 9.40

Let’s look at some of the interesting possibilities that are available to you with the latest version of the SHR reporting solution aligned with each of the afore-mentioned themes:

BSM Reporting Evolution

i. Integration with OMi10 and enabling reporting evolution from HP Operations Manager (OM) to OMi

SHR 9.40 supports integration with the newly released OMi10 (it continues to integrate with BSM 9.x as well).

In addition to the topology source options of BSM (RtSM), OM and VMware vCenter (all of which are detailed in the SHR Concepts Guide), you also have the additional option of deriving topology from:

  1. RtSM of an OMi10 instance
  2. RtSM of an OMi10 instance that is integrated with BSM 9.25
  3. RtSM of an OMi10 instance (that has been upgraded from BSM 9.24 OMi which had been set as the SHR topology source) - there are steps offered to help you keep your SHR deployment abreast of the upgraded OMi instance.

New content pack components enable the reporting of events, KPIs and Health Indicators from OMi 10 to be equally supported( as they are with BSM 9.x versions). The configuration pages in the SHR Admin console have been enhanced to provide more flexibility, as well as accommodate the new data sources in OMi 10 for integration.

An offline migration utility is also available to ‘migrate’ users consuming SHR reports in a classic OM deployment scenario as they evolve to the new OMi10/BSM deployments.

ii. Direct integration with SiteScope

With SHR 9.40, you now have the capability of reporting on SiteScope metrics in an OMi10 deployment (scenario where there is no profile database storing SiteScope metric data). This is by virtue of SHR having an API-based direct integration with SiteScope sourcing performance metrics via SiteScope APIs. Two new ETL content components have been added to facilitate this integration for sourcing System Performance and Virtualization (VMware) metrics from SiteScope.

This also further enables the possibilities in custom content development for reporting on SiteScope-monitored environments.

iii. Scale-out

SHR 9.3x supports scale-out architecture for collection with the provisioning of adding remote collectors--as may be required. With SHR 9.40, scale-out support is extended to the Sybase IQ backend database of SHR; this is done by leveraging the scale-out architecture offered by Sybase IQ on Multiplex clusters.

Improved TimeToValue (Install/Configuration/Self-monitoring)

i. Modular Installation

SHR 9.40 now supports the remote deployment of both the back-end database Sybase IQ as well as the Business Objects reporting platform. The supported platform list has been extended to cover Windows 2012 with a provision for migration as well. If you are already using SHR 9.31, there is an  upgrade process that is already in place that is facilitated to upgrade to SHR 9.40.

ii. Guided Configuration

New users of SHR in particular could choose to use the added provision for guided configuration that is offered for post-install configuration tasks, which simplifies content deployment and external data source configurations.

iii. Self-monitoring

The health of SHR itself is depicted in its admin console which is now enhanced to show the database connectivity status, disk space usage, content health and data distribution on the file system. Audit info of performance data collection from HP Operations agents, Operations manager monitoring policies for SHR and alerts (E-mails, SNMP traps) are available in addition for SHR health monitoring.

iv. Documentation Refresh

The documentation suite has been refreshed in SHR 9.40 to make it more user-friendly. The interactive installation guide offers you just the right set of install/upgrade/uninstall steps suited to your deployment scenario. This replaces the PDF Installation and Configuration Guide. There is a new Configuration guide that details the post-installation configuration, licensing instructions and a reference section detailing SiteScope monitors and Xcelsius.

You can now refer to command line options of SHR binaries, which are now detailed in the updated Administration Guide. The Content Development-Getting Started Guide and Reference Guide have been consolidated into a single Content Development Guide.

In addition to the Online Help for Users, a separate PDF file is available for each out-of-the-box content that provides end-to-end information to install and use the content.

Extended Content Set

  • SHR now offers reporting on IBM LPAR metrics integrating with HP Operations Agents and HP OMi MP for Infrastructure (Virtualization) to collect performance metrics associated to LPARs and frames and the topology.
  • Support for Exchange Server reports is now extended to cover integration with MS Exchange 2013 via the HP OM SPI/OMi Management Packs for Exchange Servers.
  • Yet another content addition is an extension of the SHR OMi content which has a plethora of additional dimensions(Event CMAs(custom message attributes), Annotations etc.) to further the cause of ad-hoc reporting on OMi Events (both OMi9.x and OMi10 versions supported). The newly added report on OMi Event Forecast offers trend and forecast of incoming events and their mean resolution time.
  • SHR Network Content is now certified with the latest NNMi10/NPS version.
  • SHR content pertaining to Enterprise Applications which integrate with HP OM is now certified to integrate with the latest corresponding HP OMi Management packs as well.
  • SHR Content on SAP, SAP HANA, Apache, and Sybase ASE which had been recent releases on HP Live Network are now part of the SHR 9.40 e-media download …

Over and above these, there are also some nice improvements in SHR 9.40, including:

  • 24x30 Availability Reports

These reports offer a snapshot view of the availability status of each CI for each hour of the month and span across SHR content.

  • Dynamic Trend Reports

A new addition to System Performance, content pack is a set of operational reports that offer dynamic metric selection and a flexible time window selection for reporting.

  • Improved Forecast Reports

The forecast reports in System and Virtualization content have improved visualization and contextual cross-launch capabilities added. You now have better flexibility in provisioning these reports with the threshold selection options being congenial for scheduling as well.

  • System Management Executive Summary refreshed

This is now as clear, consistent and complete as it could get – the inventory summary reflects the count of physical/virtual systems and those of systems with P or V unknown/OS type unknown; capacity usage with better data clarity; charts with better content and visual appeal and you now have the flexibility of providing thresholds as report-level prompts (aids during report scheduling as well).

  • The SHR Landing Page

There is a new landing page introduced in SHR 9.40 accessible via the url http://<servername>:<port>/MySHR/index.html.

The page serves to link you to MySHR (your very own SHR deployment – the reporting interface and admin consoles), SHR resources on Training, SSO, HP Live Network and the SHR Communities and Forums.

  • Supportability Enhancements

SHR 9.40 also ships a modest set of utilities that enable supportability – tools that assess data source readiness from SHR data collection perspective, OM policies to monitor SHR, utilities to trace origin of metrics used in reporting being few instances.

With this I believe you will have gained a fair idea of what SHR 9.40 has in store … and before I wind up, just adding a reminder note that SHR 9.40 stays open for Content Customization and Extensibility, continuing to provide flexible reporting options via its reporting interface and the Content Development Environment (CDE).

SHR continues to invest in easy, flexible reporting options for the enterprise – stay tuned as we enrich the realm of reporting content!
