Switching to Monitoring Automation: Get Ready

Switching to Monitoring Automation: Get Ready

The power of Monitoring Automation (MA) enables customers to adjust the monitoring of their IT environment automatically. MA is based on the Run-Time service model (RTSM) which comes with OMi. The RTSM represents the discovered infrastructure and relationships which supports the automation in MA. New components in the IT environments (e.g. nodes, applications, composite applications and services) which are populated into the RTSM are automatically detected by MA.

These IT Elements are mapped to predefined configuration blueprints (called Aspects and Management Templates) which enable automatic monitoring by Operations Manager agents or SiteScope. MA does all necessary configuration tasks without the need of user interaction. You just need to design a configuration model for your IT systems or services. With that Monitoring Automation takes care for execution and compliance of the resulting monitoring configuration.

In addition MA offers a simplified and central configuration. You can directly configure the HP Operations Agent and SiteScope. The possibility to use parameters in the policies makes it very easy to customize configuration for a specific IT elements. Tuning of monitoring configuration becomes a very simple and rapid task saving you time and money.

An excellent blog about monitoring automation can be found here: HP OMi now includes Automation to simplify IT Monitoring

With the availability of Operations Manager i (OMi) 9.24 also MA has been upgraded. It includes lots of improvements and enhancements compared to the previous versions.
The new version of OMi can be downloaded from here: Get OMi
The list of new features for OMi 9.24 can be found here: OMi 9.24 new features

Let's start with installation. Installation of MA is pretty easy. It is available as part of the OMi extension installation image. MA is directly installed on an existing OMi 9.24 instance. Any existing running OMi 9.24 server is sufficient - just install MA on top of it.

After installation please do not forget to run the redeploy script
-> can be found in the $HPBSM/installation/HPBsm924/bin)

to enable the latest MA 9.24 version. Then in the configuration wizard MA is available and can be enabled:

A quick start guide to install MA 9.24 can be found at the HP Live Network Portal:

As you can see in the server deployment dialog I have also enabled User Engagement. If you want to know more about it please have a look at: Do you know who your top HP OMi experts are? This is your chance to find out!

If you want to verify the MA version there is a detailed version information at $HPBSM/dat/opr_ma_version.txt. There you find both version and build numbers. For MA 9.24 it should look like this:
Product: Monitoring Automation
Version: 09.24
Build: 051.8038

With these few simple steps MA is installed and ready to be used.

But wait: What about license? Do I need to pay for it? The good news is that the "basic" version of MA is included with OMi! This means that all main features of MA like Policy and Aspect deployment are covered with the OMi Event Foundation license. So you can immediately start using it.
In order to use the full power of MA and to be able to monitor a composite application automatically you can switch to the Monitoring Automation for Composite Applications license later on.

Once MA is enabled there are several new tasks available in OMi. These tasks can be found in
Admin -> Operations Manage -> Monitoring:

Here you configure Management Templates, Aspects and Policies. There are tasks to do manual assignments and configure automatic assignments. You can also review the deployment jobs.

Congratulations! Now you are ready to start with Monitoring Automation.

In additional blogs I will cover Monitoring Automation configuration and typical deployment scenarios – stay tuned.
