Public Cloud Service Health Check – Simplified with HP Operations Bridge

Public Cloud Service Health Check – Simplified with HP Operations Bridge

Sultan Raja

When you consume a service from a Public Cloud vendor, you can relax because of reduced capital costs, you can pay as you go and you have less overhead on maintenance of the data center etc. You can relax because the public cloud service provider has the ownership of the infrastructure and offers IaaS, PaaS and SaaS on top of that.

Every public cloud vendor is aiming to have a service availability of “Five Nines”. According to a recent article, in all of 2014, AWS EC2 services were down for 2.41 hours in total, leaving uptime of EC2 service to 99.9974 percent. These numbers are impressive comparatively, but they are not yet close to the “Five nines”. This means that service disruption is inevitable at this point—even with leading public cloud service providers.

In your organization, when you face non-availability or performance issues of your applications that are built on top of public cloud services, the first thing is to check service health from cloud vendor perspective. Every public cloud vendor exposes the service status through a service health dashboard or status page. Amazon provides up-to-the-minute information on service availability via its Service Health Dashboard, HP Helion Public Cloud has System Status and Microsoft provides Azure Status for its services.

But, it is not practical to always look at the status page of cloud vendor where this status update is given for all of the services across the regions and the status can be “service disruption”, “performance issues” or “informational message”.

HP OMi Management Pack for AWS has the capability to automatically query the AWS Service Health Dashboard via a RSS feed in near real-time. It also provides data for only the services being consumed by your organization and only for the regions where you opted for—all in a single pane of glass.

You are only two steps away from monitoring AWS Service Availability. AWS Service Health is standard with the HP OMi Management Pack for AWS. Simply edit the aspect and provide an RSS Feed URL of your service as a first step and then assign and deploy. It makes it easy to generate events out of status change for any given service in any AWS region.
