Monitor your x86-virtualized environment for free with vPV

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Virtualization Performance Viewer (vPV) is HPE's product offering for capacity optimization, virtualization management and monitoring of virtual and cloud environments. This product is licensed on the number of instances monitored - every VM and host counts as an instance.

Here's something interesting -

For use with HPE Operations Bridge and HPE Operations Manager, vPV can run in a 'monitoring-only' mode. In this mode, vPV runs like a Operations Manager i collector and all alerts like the premium edition are sent. However, the UI is restricted to only the admin view, and data retention is limited to 8-days historical store.

Turn on this mode from the administration UI of vPV as below.



NOTE: Switching to this mode is an irreversible action - so turn it on only if you are setting up vPV purely for monitoring purposes and are integrated with OM/OMi. Also you must not mix this mode in a setup where you have any express or premium or other licenses installed.

Let's talk about how to integrate vPV with OM or OMi - this is quite simple. You install an Operations Agent v11.14 onto the vPV server and attach this in the regular installation approach with a OM or OMi server. The policies/package with the vPV policies are downloadable from vPV UI. Download the zip/tar file and install onto the server. Deploy the policies (aspects in case of OMi), and start your monitoring. There's online help documentation in vPV, on how to configure the thresholds and policies. Read up, folks!

In this mode, integration with Service Health Reporter also works and is supported.

Note that you still have the cost of the 1 OM agent on the vPV server, the cost of each VM and host instance counted as a target connector (if the VM guest OS is not a managed node, in which case agent OS instance applies). However, if you were a VISPI customer this cost applies the same as before.

This mode can be applied with Operations Bridge Express, Premium or Ultimate and it works just the same.

Thanks once agian for such a awesome blog.

As you mentioned For use with HPE Operations Bridge and HPE Operations Manager, vPV can run in a 'monitoring-only' mode. Does that mean we do not need any license to monitoring Vertualization? Does iit monitor virtualization layer - the hosts (ESXi, etc), the VMs in monitoring-only mode?

and What is the benefit of buying CO license?

Think your question is answered in the blog post, with the only point to note - vPV is now renamed as Cloud Optimizer (CO).

- You don't need CO licenses when running it 'monitoring-only' mode

- the difference is that you won't get the UI functionality - other information is present in the VISPI to Cloud Optimizer technology migration guide document available at software support online.

- yes - the host, guest, datastores, etc are monitored and premium level of data collection/monitoring/aleritng is offered - directly sending the alerts to HPE OMi (or HPE OM)
