Monitor your SAP HANA Database in 5 minutes or less with HP OMi



SAP HANA is an in-memory data platform that is deployable as an appliance on-premise or in the cloud.  It is a revolutionary platform that’s best suited for performing real-time analytics, and developing and deploying real-time applications. At the core of this real-time data platform is the database which is fundamentally different than any other database engine in the market today.


Ensuring that this database is up and running is critical to the applications using the database. That is exactly what the OMi Management Pack for SAP HANA from HP enables the user to achieve. Because these management packs work on top of OMi, operators can seamlessly monitor these SAP HANA Databases like they would any other application or infrastructure in the enterprise—all within a single console. 




What does it take to monitor?

Configuring the monitoring of the SAP HANA database is just a simple matter of few clicks, which will take 5 minutes or less with the OMi Management Pack for SAP HANA. This is with assumption that the user has already installed OMi and the required Management Packs.

If you have the environment ready, it is just a matter of following two steps to start monitoring their SAP HANA Databases:

Step2: Deploy Management Template


You must be wondering whether the above steps require pushing some files to the SAP HANA systems. The answer is NO. The OMi MP for SAP HANA is designed to collect the SAP HANA Database metrics from a remote managed node. The management pack requires HP Operations Agent to be installed on this remote managed node. The above steps deploy the required instrumentation to this managed node from where the SAP HANA Database is monitored. The user can monitor multiple SAP HANA Databases from this single remote managed node.


Now let us dive into the details of these steps.


Step 1: Discover

The first step to monitoring is to discover the SAP HANA Database. This can be easily achieved by simply deploying the out of the box Aspect “HANA Discovery” to the remote managed node. This aspect requires the following parameters to be specified during the deployment:

  1. JDBC Url to connect to the SAP HANA System
  2. Directory path of the HANA JDBC Driver
  3. SAP HANA Username
  4. SAP HANA Password


On deployment the SAP HANA Database is discovered and the required CIs gets created in the RTSM. Here we are talking about few clicks to discover your SAP HANA Database.



Step 2: Deploy Management Template

After the SAP HANA Database is discovered, the user can select one of the out of the box Management Templates and deploy it to the SAP HANA Database (identified by its SID). This will ensure the enablement of monitoring of the SAP HANA Database from the remote managed node. Fine tuning the default values of thresholds and collections is very easy using “Assignment and Tuning” feature of OMi MA (Monitoring Automation). DBA and other non-operations personnel can tailor the monitoring without needing any operator intervention saving time and giving flexibility to the right experts.


With the deployment of the Management Template the monitoring of your SAP HANA database starts. Metrics are collected and events are generated which can be worked upon from the Event perspective.



So with just two easy steps you can enable monitoring for your SAP HANA Database and monitor it like any other application in your IT ecosystem. These easy steps takes less than 5 minutes.
