Cloud Service Model in a XaaS world


Every level of your organization is asking for it. What do they want? Cloud. They may not fully understand it, but they are requesting it—now. And the responsibility to meet these demands falls to IT. But, IT has to keep with corporate IT policies, to both acquire and manage the computing infrastructure required for providing the service. They have to run the cloud management software necessary to provide the cloud service, whilst making arrangements to deliver the cloud service to both IT and line of business users.


Today, we’ll examine the different types of cloud service models, and the challenges IT faces as defined by the scope of work undertaken to deploy these services across a private and/or hybrid cloud environment. This occurs where the cloud consumer (i.e... IT or Line of Business user) does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure (e.g... network, servers, operating systems, or storage). Instead  the cloud consumer is responsible for the deployed applications and possibly setting application-hosting environment configurations.



Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) gives cloud consumers the capability to provision processing, storage, networks and other fundamental computing resources. Cloud consumers can deploy and run arbitrary software, which may include the use of operating systems and applications. With a focus on software components in an application stack, cloud consumers use IaaS computing resources (e.g... VM) for raw computing needs, and do not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure.


IT Challenges : In the IaaS cloud service model, IT needs to acquire, control and manage the physical computing resources underlying the service (e.g... servers, networks, storage, hosting infrastructure). IT runs the cloud management software necessary to render the necessary computing resources to the cloud consumer through a set of service interfaces and computing resource abstractions (e.g... VMs). Establishing control over the physical hardware and cloud software that make the provisioning of Infrastructure-as-a-Services possible (e.g... physical servers, network equipment, storage devices, host OS and hypervisor software for virtualization).



Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) continues from the above IaaS cloud-service model by providing cloud consumers with the means to deploy their own cloud.  They can now create or acquire applications created by using programming languages and tools supported by IT. The PaaS cloud consumer has control over the applications and possibly over some of the hosting environment settings; with no or limited access to the underlying cloud infrastructure such as network, servers, operating systems (OSs), or storage.


IT Challenges: In this instance, IT will need to manage the computing infrastructure for the platform and run the cloud software that provides the components of the platform. This infrastructure includes items such as runtime software execution stack, databases and other middleware components.

This typically also means supporting the development, deployment and management process of the PaaS cloud consumer by providing tools such as:

  • Integrated development environments (IDEs)
  • Development versions of cloud software
  • Software development kits (SDKs)
  • Deployment and management tools

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) as the last phase in the cloud service model, SaaS provides cloud consumers with the means to order applications-cloud infrastructure from a myriad of cloud providers (i.e... private, hybrid, public cloud and traditional services). These applications offer limited administrative control, and are consumed directly from an intuitive self service subscriber portal, a thin client interface that is accessible from various client devices.


IT Challenges: IT needs to deploy, configure, maintain and update the operation of the software applications on a cloud infrastructure.
